Which Version Of ââ¬Å"Hurtâ⬠Would You Prefer? Nine Inch Nails versus Johnny Cash The song ââ¬Å"Hurtâ⬠written by Trent Reznor and originally performed by his band Nine Inch Nails is a melancholy, haunting song. Nine Inch Nailsââ¬â¢ version was recorded in 1994 and rerecorded and released by Johnny Cash in 2002. Each of the performers has a style, which some people would argue is at opposite ends of the spectrum of popular music; one is what is referred to as ââ¬Å"Industrial Rockâ⬠, the other is country. Indeed, the musical genres are diverse; however, the song ââ¬Å"Hurtâ⬠transcends the boundaries between old and new, hard and soft, and especially the differences and similarities between these men. The story goes that Cashââ¬â¢s record producer, called and asked Reznor for permission to ââ¬Å" cover the song ââ¬ËHurtââ¬â¢.â⬠Sharples states, ââ¬Å"It was as if Trent Reznor unconsciously wrote it for Mr. Cashâ⬠(2011). Trent Reznor was flattered that someone with Johnnyââ¬â¢s musical talent and long-standing status in the music world would even be interested in interpreting his song. When Trent first heard the final copy of Johnnyââ¬â¢s version, Trent stated, ââ¬Å". . .it felt like somebody kissed your girlfriendâ⬠(ââ¬Å"The Nine Inch Nails Wiki,â⬠2012). According to Sharples, it would be some four months later that Trent and his music team would see Johnnyââ¬â¢s video for the song. It was then that ââ¬Å"Reznor was flattered, honored, and moved to tears by the resultsâ⬠(2011). Reznor says. By the end I was really on the verge of tears. There was, like, this moist clearing of our throats and then, Uh, OK, lets get some coffee. (Sharples, 2011). After Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Trent became angry at the lack of response of the government. He had interest in New Orleans because his studio was a place he perfected his sound and made music that earned ââ¬Å"Platinumâ⬠status in sales. ââ¬Å"The most important producer of human capital in the United States is the public education systemâ⬠(Brimley Garfield, 2008, p. 1). In order for the public education system to produce human capital, it must be provided the necessary resources. How these resources are provided has changed over the years and will continue to change in the years to come. The following paragraphs will take a look at the future of educational financing by taking a look at various issues facing education today and exploring the impact that they will have 10 years from now. As the face of education continues to change, so will laws that define itsââ¬â¢ funding. School Vouchers One very heated topic of discussion currently is the use of vouchers to pay for private education at the K-12 level. A voucher is basically a scholarship for low income eligible students. The money for the vouchers comes from companies that use the program as a tax credit. Basically the business will make a voucher donation for a specified amount and then claim that amount on their taxes. The state then refunds the company the amount that they donated at the end of the year when the company files their taxes. This system provides a tax break for businesses and opportunities for under privileged students to attend private institutions. While the program sounds good, it is not without opposition. Those in public education argue that the program takes funding away from public schools.Show MoreRelatedEssay on Future of Educational Finance4100 Words à |à 17 Pages Future of Educational Finance Grand Canyon University: EDA-535 October, 2013 Gary Marx stated ââ¬Å"identifying, monitoring and considering the implications of trends is one of the most basic processes for creating the futureâ⬠(Stevenson, 2010 p. 1). Statement of Intent Jean Anouilh redefined the intensity of drama and conflict in Antigone, which was originally written by Sophocles. What makes this statement rightfully accurate is the discussion between Antigone and King Creon. The discussion was brought to action when Antigone went to bury Polyneices, her brother who was a traitor to Thebes and whose body was commanded to be left outside without rightful burial rights. Now Antigone has to bare the strong grip of punishment from King Creon for her alleged actions. But all of this built up frightfulness ended up transitioning into a challenging debate over to whether the job/role of a person with high position like Creon should get in the way of personal matters, like the burial of Polynices. Antigone shows this strong feminist personality that is not scared to die, which resembles the personality many playwrights like Shakespeare and Anouilh try to portray for women who could have a heart and courage of a man. We will write a custom essay sample on A Rewrite of Antigone or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page She did not back down and run away from the responsibility of the burial and exemplified the courage to see death straight in the face. Unlike Antigone, Creon represented the essence of the politicians, put work before everything. Even though he did not like was doing putting Polynices out there to decay while Eteocles had a formal funeral, it was what he needed the people to see. During the argument, it seemed that the power of Creonââ¬â¢s legitimacy was shrinking as Antigone questioned him on topics from the burial to the qualities of a king that Creon did not meet. I will redesign the whole conversation between Antigone and King Creon by cutting off the excess details all over the discussion and focusing primary on a leaderââ¬â¢s point of view to commit secrecy in order to keep their legitimacy and to value job values over personal views, expressing both charactersââ¬â¢ true potential personalities, bringing in a twist of comic relief into the tone of the discussion, but most importantly try to keep a parallel ending of the scene similar to Anouilhââ¬â¢s version. The purpose of all these revisions is to the change the tone of the play from a very tragic play to a comic relief play with some spice of black comedy. The Rewrite of Antigone [Guards have left the room] Antigone: Uncle Creon, or may I say ââ¬Å"Dadâ⬠, you know Iââ¬â¢ll just turn right back around and bury Polyneices again. Creon: Little girl, why did you try to bury your brother Polyneices when I told everyone not to do it? Antigone: I would never leave a family member outside in cold. And even if they were, I would bring them into my house, feed them, make sure they treated well, and then go about our necessary business. Same goes for Polynicesââ¬â¢s case. I was going to take his body and clean it up with herbs and medicines, and gave him my own way of funeral rights. He was my brother, which means family take care of family. Creon: That boy was not family at all. All he ever did is come around here to make a ruckus and leave chaos behind. He betrayed the family, and disgraced your familyââ¬â¢s name among Thebes. Antigone: [mumbled] And you would know? Creon: What did you say? Antigone: Nothing, geez. Creon: Girl, you are so lucky that your daddy used to be king before the fool died out. Hold up, that just remind me of something. Did you do it because your daddy had power, so you think you could just walk all over the town and do what you want ? Antigone:[rolls her eyes] No. I told you already- Creon: Donââ¬â¢t get smart with me. The only reason why you still standing here and not at the execution spot is because you are about to marry my son. Listen up, I know you heard the law that anyone who touches that boyââ¬â¢s body would be sent to execution. Because you cross that rule, you are to be escorted immediately home and if anyone asks you whatââ¬â¢s wrong, itââ¬â¢s a sickness. Got that? Antigone: Why should I do what you are saying? Youââ¬â¢re not my mom or my dad, technically. I did it , so do what you got to do to me, because it sure does seem like you weigh this role of yours higher than your moral views? Creon:[steps closer to her, raises his voice gradually] What do you mean? Antigone: Stop acting so naive. It seems like whatever the law tells you to do, you roll over like a dog and do the command. How pathetic? Creon: That law you are talking about sure did take your brother life quickly, and maybe the same embarrassment could be said for your father. Antigone:[steps up to Creonââ¬â¢s face] You actually think Iââ¬â¢m afraid of you ,huh donââ¬â¢t you? Well newsflash, thatââ¬â¢s not my so called ââ¬Å"weak patheticâ⬠father left me with. Even though he was put into a hard situation to where fate decided his beginning and end, he handed down to me the power to death in the eye, not being afraid to die. Creon:[backs away to the other side of the room] Woman, you must be crazy! The arrogance and pride of you comes from your dad. Iââ¬â¢ve seen that gesture displayed by him many times, and do you know where that led him, to the ground. Great men are driven by pride and, itââ¬â¢s been proven. As for me, I will civilize Thebes. Girl, being a king is a hard role to play. Yes, it comes with all the fame, glory and fortune, but it carries baggage of issues alongside, like you. I have to try to keep everyone pleased, which is the reason why your brother is out there. When I woke up in the morning after your father died, they gave me the opportunity to rule. Antigone: So did you say yes? Creon: How could I not. If I turned the offer back, I would have been viewed as a coward Antigone: Look here, Creon. The only reason why you are in this situation is because you made a very stupid unwise choice of making that law. Iââ¬â¢m going to bury even if I die trying and there is nothing you can do to change my mind Creon: [starts shaking Antigone] Iââ¬â¢m tired of playing games with you, Antigone. If you donââ¬â¢t want to enjoy everything you have, then fine. But, donââ¬â¢t say I did not try to save you from this tug-of-war you are having with fate. One thing I will not let politics be the cause of why you Antigone dies. It happened with your brothers Polynices and Eteocles and now youââ¬â¢re causing it again for me. All I want is for you to be happy and live happily ever after with Haemon, baby girl. Antigone: [Breaks free of Creonââ¬â¢s grip] Creon, I love Haemon with all my heart ,but if it is coming to a point, like now, that you are using Haemon as a tool to keep your legitimacy, then no I donââ¬â¢t love Haemon! Also what if Haemon stops doing the things I love about him and starts to change, because I said yes to this!! I absolutely hate the fact that monsters like you cause the world to go down in secrecy because of their lack of reasoning for outcomes for your decisions. I hope you rot in hell! [Attempts to slap Creon] Creon:[ blocks the slap, yanks Antigone by the arms] Shut up! Shut up! Shut up! You ungrateful little brat! [Enter Ismene] Ismene: Antigone! Iââ¬â¢m here to help you. Antigone: Youââ¬â¢re time had come and gone. You did not what to go with me, so go away! Isemene: But sister Iââ¬â¢m here for you and our brother Polyneices. I have a change of hearth. Creon: Now she knows about it? No, No, No!!! Thatââ¬â¢s it, guards take Antigone away at once!

Wallstreet movie critisim essays It is difficult to discern whether the movie Wall Street is intended to be a scathing critique of modern bureaucracies in general or the men and women who work within them. Oliver Stone uses the traditional American coming of age story to attack modern perceptions of success and power in the corporation. Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen) is a small town guy whose father worked his whole life at a blue collar job to provide him with all the opportunities his limited income could provide. Empowered by his fathers drive and an NYU degree in finance Bud sets his sights on striking it rich on the New York stock exchange. But Buds unbridled ambition combined with his resistance to advice of those around him eventually lead him into the shady world of big business fraud and insider trading. It is within this context that Oliver Stone uses Michael Douglas character Gordon Gecko to show what it takes to be successful in business as an individual and a corporation. Gordon Gecko (Michael Douglas) is smart, driven, powerful, incredibly wealthy and everything the Bud aspires to be. He proudly espouses, in true merchant fashion, fact that he produces nothing whatsoever but only uses money to produce the illusion of power. At one point while arguing the merits of his plans to liquidate the company Buds father has worked for twenty-four years Gordon argues that 90 percent of the public has little or no net worth and that the richest 1 percent own half of the countries wealth, and so if Bud wants to be successful he is going to have to decided who he is with. Is he with the 99 percent of hard working laborers who are being robed of the production of their efforts or the 1 percent that lives the life of luxury those efforts provide. As time progresses Geckos unyielding drive for more comes to symbolize not only his own unscrupulous methods for personal advancement but for all major corporat...

Business Law Assignment - Coursework Example The paper tells that in the Constitution of the United States, Article 1, Section 2 refers to the qualifications that must be met to serve as a member of the House of Representatives. It states that ââ¬Å"No Person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the Age of twenty five Years, and been seven Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosenâ⬠. Article 1, Section 3 of the Constitution delineates the requirements to become a Senator, by stating that ââ¬Å"No Person shall be a Senator who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty Years, and been nine Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State for which he shall be chosenâ⬠. The qualifications to serve as President of the United States are found in Article 2, Section one. The document states that ââ¬Å"no Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United Statesââ¬Å". The Age requirement for the House of Representatives is five years less than the requirements for senate and ten years less than for president. The age and citizenship requirements for Senate exceed those of the House by five and three years respectively. They are less than those for President by five years for both categories. The qualifications to serve as President are the highest exceeding the age requirement for the House by ten years and the Senate by five years, and the citizenship requirement for the House by seven years and for Senate by five years. All three of the offices require that the Person be a natural born Citizen of the United States. Question 2: Stanglin argues that the ordin ance violates the equal protection, because there is no rational basis to suppose that children are at a greater danger being near a class E dance hall than a skating rink. I disagree with this statement. The Equal Protection clause states that "no state shall ... deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the lawsâ⬠(US Const., amend. XIV). This statement taken on its own can be taken either extremely strictly or be loosely interpreted, but there is a rather extensive history of supreme court cases that has led up to the current guidelines on interpreting this clause. Some of the most famous of these cases had to do with equality between races, womenââ¬â¢s suffrage and the rights of immigrants. Currently the equal protection clause is interpreting as protecting state governments from discriminating against these types of rights--fundamental or inalienable rights. For cases like Stanglinââ¬â¢s, where no fundamental rights are involved, the state ne ed only to show there is some type of rational basis for whatever distinction they make through the law. Since the state passed the ordinance in the interest of protecting the youth from drugs and dangerous sex, it was not passed arbitrarily and thus not irrational. Personally, it seems to me that Stanglin filed this suit simply out of personal interest, because he would lose money for his business. I donââ¬â¢t think the equal protection should ever work in this way. The clause is not to be used for protecting the profit seeking interests of business from regulations imposed by local governments. It is to protect people from arbitrary and unjust discrimination of the law. Question 3: The primary element in this case, is the fact that Hernandez relied upon a promise that a business made to him, which they failed to keep causing him to suffer monetary loss. Thus I am certain Hernandez should win this case given that the circumstances meet the criteria for promissory estoppel. The t ext defines a promise in a promissory estopp
